I get a lot of calls and emails from people that are not in the 'wine world', wanting to find out how to get in. Is it that easy? Just take a wine course and get in the business of wine, right? What is the business of wine anyway?
There are so many positions in the business of wine, some very corporate and intricate, so if you are thinking that it's just drinking and talking about wine, there is a lot more to this scene.
My recommendations are based on the individual seeking advice. So think about where you might fit. Restaurant/wine bar, retail, wholesale? It is all sales and sales support, so if you are shy or don't like sales then it may not be for you. If you love wine, love learning (you will never stop by the way), love talking to people about wine, travel, adventure, history, pairings... Then this might be a career worth checking out! I know I did, I started thinking about it in 2006 and never looked back. I also never stop learning, I just finished both units of
The Wine scholar Guild's, Italian Wine Scholar and passed both with highest honors!
Good luck to all of you out there thinking about a wine career, a great place to start is WSET Level one. Cheers, Nikki
